Check your air conditioner for these common problems before calling for service.

1. Check disconnect switches (usually located on the walls near both units) - Check both indoor and outdoor disconnect switches if you have a split system and make sure both are in the ''on'' position.

2. Check Breakers (in the panel box) - Make sure that the circuit breakers for the air conditioner are on. Many different things can cause a breaker to trip, particularly during storms. If the circuit breakers blow a second time - do not reengage - there is a problem.

3. Make sure that the air filters are clean and that there is nothing blocking the return air (usually located on a closet door, in a hallway or in the ceiling) and that all the ceiling grills are open and unobstructed. Reduced or obstructed air flow can result in pressure build up causing the breaker to trip.

4. Check for the correct settings on your thermostat. If you want the system to turn on, make sure the thermostat is set below (for cool air) or above (for heat) the room temperature and the system switch is in the correct position. Allow a few minutes for the time delay relay to cycle before making a determination. If the thermostat needs to be recalibrated you may have to set the temperature 5 to 10 degrees out from the desired temperature. This is not an emergency and can be corrected easily by a professional.

5. Check the pan beneath the air handler (usually located in a closet, ceiling or garage area). **If it is located in the ceiling, you may want to call a professional due to the chances of accidentally falling**. If there is water in the pan, your system most likely has a clogged drain line and has been shut off by the float switch (a switch installed to prevent water damage from occurring). Clean out the pan and reset the switch. If you have access to a shop vacuum, vacuum out the pan and the drain line under the unit. Then, go outside and find the area where the drain line empties out. Place the shop vacuum hose over the end of the drain line (using your hands to help seal the connection) and vacuum out. If you cannot clear the line, call a professional.

6. In addition to self maintenance (changing filters monthly and making sure air flow is not obstructed), your home comfort system should be professionally maintained at least once a year by a properly trained service technician. A service technician can make sure your system works safely and gives you top notch performance.

If the above procedures don't correct the problem call a reputable professional in your area. Remember that you will most likely have to pay more for service on weekends, nights and holidays. Nights (when it's dark outside) in particular are to be avoided. Night service fees can be so costly that often times you would have been better off checking into a hotel (or with a friend) for the night. There are many companies that will come out after dark, collect their increased service fee and inform you that they cannot fix it until morning. They will sight various reasons such as they cannot get the part(s) needed until then or that they simply cannot diagnose it in the dark. While valid reasons in general, they should have been discussed prior to arranging for service.

Regular maintenance of your system will make it operate more efficiently and extend the useful life of your system. Properly diagnosing an air conditioner takes expensive specialty tools, testing equipment and most importantly proper training. Remember, air conditioning units have sensitive and expensive parts which can be damaged from improper service. Make sure the service company you choose is properly licensed and insured. You should also check with your local Better Business Bureau for any complaints filed against the company.
